How to Make a Carpet Cleaning Solution

The internet is literally packed with carpet cleaning solution recipes. It’s hard to know which one works. They all differ and the ingredients may or may not be available in your location. You need a carpet cleaning solution that not only works, but saves money, and is kind to your carpets and kind to the environment.

It’s fun making a cleaning product and you feel that you have accomplished something, plus you know it is safe for you and your family.

Professional Carpet Cleaning Detergent

Let’s look at an example of a professional carpet cleaning formula;

  • STTP (sodium tripolyphosphate) – 30%
  • Sodium carbonate – 20%
  • Betaine derivative, anionic – 2.9%
  • sodium sulphate – 17%
  • Optical brightener – 0.1%
  • Fragrance – Trace
  • Metso PENTABEAD – 20 sodium metasilicate – 30%

It is highly unlikely you will want to go to the effort of finding these chemicals, let alone producing the formula. Then how much do you use? It is just an example and believe me carpet cleaning solutions or detergents vary so much. Companies that manufacture these formulas spend years perfecting them. They are extensively tested.

Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solutions

Do you want to make a powdered formula or a liquid formula? Do you want to use chemicals or ingredients that are eco-friendly, green and safe to use?

Let’s have a look at easy to find commodities that might be in your household;

  • Essential or fragrance oils – essential for a fresh and clean smelling solution or formula
  • Lemons – it is well know that lemon juice cleans and disinfects, smells good too!
  • Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate – well known for it’s cleaning properties and it’s safe to use
  • White vinegar – non toxic solvent, deodoriser, mild acid, disinfectant, rinses easily with water
  • Sodium percarbonate – have a look at my blog for sodium percarbonate
  • Hydrogen peroxide – instead of sodium percarbonate. Use 12%, found easily on eBay
  • Ammonia – Organic cleaner with a strong smell. Cleans well and removes stains. Always dilute down
  • Borax – superb for carpet cleaning as it does not contain phosphate or chlorine. Eco-friendly and safe
  • Sodium carbonate – also know as soda/washing crystals. Acts as a water softener. Removes grease, oil and wine stains
  • Salt – yes normal salt. Mixed with other ingredients acts as a great cleaner and disinfectant
  • Citric acid – used to soften water and therefore boosts detergents, also know as a builder

All of the above are easily obtainable products and can be combined to make carpet cleaning formulas. They can be added to ready made solutions, for extra cleaning power, or combined in various amounts and combinations to make a solution.

The addition of a surfactant will increase the cleaning power. A surfactant is a compound that makes up a detergent. I found Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds on the web. It is biodegradable and made with plant-based surfactants. A good base to start with. Don’t add too much!

Why not try laundry detergent. It can be a good base for your homemade carpet cleaning solution. I recommend bio for dirty carpets or non bio if you don’t want the addition of enzymes. Eco-friendly and natural laundry detergents can also be used. [button link=”https://www.diynatural.com/homemade-laundry-detergent-soap/” window=”yes”]Make Your Own[/button]
