Is carpet cleaning eco-friendly? It most definitely is! Carpet cleaning companies are in the business of recycling if you think about it. Carpets last longer when they are cleaned and that means less manufacturing. Less manufacturing means less carbon footprint. Our world will never become cleaner unless we repair instead of replace. Most of us are guilty of NOT reusing materials and products.
It stands to reason that cleaning carpets is much cheaper than replacing them. So why do many people just buy new? The answer is simple! They were never cleaned in the first place and therefore became worn and unsightly well before their time. Imagine never washing your car. The paint work would suffer as the dirt and grit damages the finish. Over time it would scratch and become dull.
What about the Energy Required to Clean Carpets?
Carpet Cleaners will either use electricity or fuel, such as petrol or diesel, to run the equipment. Then of course we all use fuel for transportation. The carbon footprint is significantly less than carpet replacement. To manufacture carpets and transport them uses way more energy and raw materials. Then the carpets have to be fitted which also adds to the footprint.
Old carpets have to be disposed of but what happens to them? Although most carpet components are recyclable or reusable, only about 4 percent of waste carpet gets reclaimed. The rest either goes in landfill or gets burned for energy.
Are Carpet Cleaning Products Bad for the Environment?
The world is changing and so are carpet cleaning products. Most of them, I am glad to say, are green and kinder to the environment. Natural ingredients and food based products are widely used. Science has come on leaps and bounds in the carpet cleaning industry but we still have a responsibility to use less chemicals and use less detergents when operating our business. There are alternatives that work just as well and they are much safer.
What Method of Carpet Cleaning is the Greenest?
In my humble opinion Hot Water Extraction (steam clean) is the best for the environment. Yes it uses much more water than a dry or low moisture carpet clean but it is the most effective way to clean carpets and remove soil. Carpets will last much longer and therefore it’s kinder to the environment.
Next time you think of brand new carpets ask yourself these questions. Can they be cleaned? Is there more life in them? Do you care about the world?
Today is the 1st of January 2018. Happy New Year to all.
